My work is inspired by imperfect beauty, ancient artifacts and handmade objects. I like exploring how clay responds to force and how glaze responds to heat. There is an element of working in this way that is out of my control and I enjoy the happenstance that is part of the making process. This piece reminds me of a controlled demolition frozen in motion. There is beauty, even in destruction.

I am exploring thae idea of halted energy like a photo of a controlled demolition or a dance paused in motion. My work is very physical and tactile and comes about through a series of actions. I use the potter’s wheels as a tool to create deep textures. I then dissect and reassemble these textures to build complex forms. Aesthetically, I am drawn to ancient artifacts, the imperfect beauty of Japanese ceramics forms and North African jewelry surfaces. In all of these things, there is a humble, handmade charisma that inspires my work.
