I think most people are either more drawn to geometric/rational/left brain/straight lines and angles (structure) or to organic/intuitive/right brain/lyrical lines and curves (flow). Of course it's best, especially for the artist, to have a balance between the two. Too much geometric can get boring and without life and too much organic can lack solidity and groundedness. This SQUARE FOOT has too much of the former. He's stuck in his mental making sense of the world which means he's a square. Or at least that's what I think as I know I've got too much of the organic for my own good! Be that as it may, I love the old wooden shoe forms and am especially drawn to the ones used to make baby shoes. They are so tiny staying forever fixed at the same size while the child grows into an adult. The adult has to put aside childish things and become rational and adept at abstract thinking ultimately getting lost in the world of the mind -- represented by the square. Initially I get an intuitive feel for the objects I collect -- I sense the ones that seem meant to go together. For SQUARE FOOT it wasn't until after the fact when I was deciding on a title for the work that I recognized the connection between the metal square and the foot in terms of measurement. "Ah ha!" said my mind...
