This is a conceptual piece inspired by uncomfortable human emotions such as anxiety and depression. I have transfigured a non-physical subject, such as a feeling, into a vaguely recognisable physical object, such as an organ. The visceral and tactile quality of the piece means that the ability to grasp and feel the subject is heightened. Therefore bringing the viewer closer to the experience. With rugged knots, folds, stitches, and ties left exposed, the observer is allured back to the journey of its creation and the process the maker had undergone. Fabric is a means to protect, cloth, and warm us. String is used to fix, sew and mend. I was drawn to use fabric, string and wood because they are every day materials that are highly emotionally charged. The fabric also provokes a worn and weathered feeling that depicts memory. The sculpture is a metaphor for an emotional state and as we are experiencing a massive epidemic of mental health problems, it is a subject that we can soften to.
