The spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony and the vessels used have intrigued me from the moment I started working with clay and came across a tea bowl in my research. The idea that the tea bowl was a simple vessel that could be made beautiful through its imperfections was uplifting in a world that rejected imperfections and made one feel as though they have to 'fix' a nose or tummy or hair that didn't conform to the norm. The tea ceremony forces one to stop; slow down and take in the beauty of the moment, a memory that I have of my mother of our morning breakfast together and sipping tea. The bowl was thrown on the wheel then hand trimmed and textured using a piece of cord. Bisque fired then glazed using tenmoku and shino glazes then fired in a soda kiln. soda firing is an atmospheric firing. The soda reacts with the flame and becomes a glaze which coats the pot and adds to the beauty.
