About The Artwork

Piece from ongoing "Song of the South" series. This body of work uses characters from the "Tales of Uncle Remus" to explore issues related to racism, poverty, addiction, religion, lust, greed, abuse, and other potentially traumatic universal social themes from a Southern perspective. Tar Baby stands for multiple themes in this particular study. It explores the tradition of the Tar Baby in folk tales and alludes to the misconception of its origin and how it came to be known as a racist term. It stands for the true meaning of the figure - a sticky situation. It embodies slavery of all sorts and shapes and, again, makes use of gold spray paint, so that this particular Tar Baby is an obvious paint huffer. Roofing tar, asphalt, and a taxidermy form were used to construct this piece.
