About The Artwork

The culture of Yamal’s indigenous peoples manifests itself in various forms of modern art. Ethnographic, folklore, archaeological materials developed through historical and cultural studies of Yamal served as a base for the creative experiments of Ivan Demyanenko, a young Yugra artist, a member of the Russian Union of Artists and Russian Union of Designers, teaching at the Department for Architecture, Design and Decorative Arts. His Legend of Sikhirtya is a series of monumental ceramics compositions reflecting the author’s attempt to reconsider folklore images and plots while preserving their origin and making it easily recognizable. Sikhirtya – mysterious word, which has long sounded in the Nenets tales. sikhirtya - mages, wizards, ancient people, they can still appear on Earth, protecting the weak, bringing good and punishing those who are wrong. Belief in magic is a part of the life of representatives of peoples who lead a traditional way of life. Legends and fairy tales help people distinguish good from evil, and ancient myths carry knowledge that helps people live in reality. The sculpture "The Bird of Fog" is a tree trunk, on top of which there is a solar sign with the face of the idol and wings. In the center of the composition – on the wings of a bird – created by the relief of everyday scenes, recreating the life of ancient people Sikhirtya (camp, traditional activities – hunting, herding, etc.). On top of the wings depicted themselves Sikhirtya, located on the shores of "big water". Also in the lower part of the decorative composition, to the left and right of the tree trunk, the Sikhirtya people are depicted. Dark earthy colors were used for each part of the decorative composition, starting with the Bird and ending with the tree trunk. Why was chosen the bird of the fog? Legends say that the people Sikhirtya appears mostly at night or when the earth falls mist.

Lecturer of ceramics and design at Nizhnevartovsk State University. Member of international association of art - AIAP UNESCO, member union of art Russia. Analyzing the works of art by Ivan Demyanenko, one can distinguish many features of postmodern art. The artist is constantly experimenting. His works are heterogeneous, but they form one creative space. In his works he chooses such means of influence on the viewer as color and color spot, texture; the use of mixed techniques; creation of a series of works; striving for non-figurative, abstract interpretation of images. The associativity and symbolism of his artistic language appeal to archaic forms of thinking. They return a person to a time of primordial chaos.
