About The Artwork

Dorothy Tanner (1923-2020) is the co-founder of Lumonics with Mel Tanner (1925-1993). Lumonics is one of the first and longest-running light art studios in the US, originating in 1967. The Black Cat is also available as The White Cat and as the Black & White Cat in which one side is black and one side is white. The Medium is plexiglas and LED light. It comes with a remote control which enables gradual color change or a static color. Each is signed and numbered. The focus of the series is to create a relaxing, meditative environment for the home or office.

(1923-2020) born in Bronx, New York. The major challenge for me in art is to keep under control the tyranny of a logical mind. The spirit that moves me is capricious, unruly and irreverent. Most of my work grows out of intuitive impulse; the rest gets going by just playing around. My intention is to create objects (painting, sculpture, fountains, furniture) with light as an intrinsic element that influences and alters the environment it is in. How we feel, what we see, is largely the result of the color vibrations that envelop us. Light can be likened to a great magician, a master illusionist with the power to create, define, and solidify, or leave in shadow what we believe to be real.
