100 slip cast plasterwork bullets, made to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War and our then involvement in other wars. On holiday in France in 1992, we were approached, while sat in a cafe in Verdun, by a stranger. His car had gotten stuck in the mud, the day before and he asked if we could give him a lift back, to retrieve his belongings. My father agreed. On the drive out, the stranger told us all about the history of Verdun and explained that if you walked a ploughed field and looked for chalk lines, this would be where trenches or artillery positions once were and that would be where you'd find all kinds of "treasure". Once we arrived at the strangers car, deep in the Verdun countryside, he opened his boot and in there were unexploded hand grenades, parts of shells and bits of old rifles caked in mud. We said our goodbyes. On the way back to town my father stopped the car and said "let's see" we walked for 100m across a freshly ploughed field, carefully following the white debris of chalk. I picked up a dozen live trench bullets. As with places that have had war visited on them, people still die every year in northern France from unexploded ordinance. Each, slip cast, plaster bullet is made to the same volume as average human form. There are 100 bullets, 1 for each year.
