Installation view. Both works are for sale individually. I am attracted to dogs as a subject matter because, to me, they are an example of human projection, of humanity’s sadistic desire for mastery and control that runs concurrently with our need for tenderness and empathy. My interest lies in what happens when you empathize with the animal, when you see yourself occupying the space of that animal, as being both the one in control (subject) and as the entity being controlled (object). It becomes about power, who has it, and how one reclaims it.

Caroline Jacobson grapples with the violence exerted by 24/7 media culture on the individual psyche. She explores human-dog hybrids as avatars uniquely suited to our ever-fracturing reality. Bred and molded for permanent innocence and dependency, dog’s function both as extensions of their owners’ identities and as trophies used to signify status and wealth. As the mandates of capitalism continue to reshape human behavior, we inevitably begin to grow more like our fetish objects: caught in endless cycles of projection and codependency, never seen as ends in ourselves.
