Ships in a Crate
Toxic Evolution is a series of different sculptures which represent a fictional animal species. The sculptures are composed of three principal materials; assorted animal bones, wire, and waste. The project serves as a critique of the power of man as the polluter, and at the same time as an ode to nature and its constant intention to evolve, against all the odds. During the last 6 years I have collected bones from bulls, cows, horses, boars, vultures, antelopes, ostrich and pigs, which I have prepared and reassembled to create a new series of animals, apparently transformed by the toxic waste produced by today ́s consumer society: elephants with feathers, two legged sheep, reptiles with fur, two headed lizards and amphibious ruminants enact a compromise between the possible and impossible, the real and the imaginary. However, they always aim to be believable in their skeletal structure, composition, and movement. In this way I recreate a collection reminiscent of scientific samples of zoology or paleontology, whose origin is in distinct scopes of knowledge and art history: from Greek mythology (like the minotaur, the faun, the griffin..) to the dragons of the middle ages and the fantasy creatures of Norse cultures such as elves and trolls. Also, without going too far, it ́s important to mention the artist Joan Foncuberta, in particular his works ́Herbarium ́and ́Fauna ́ of the 80s, along with ́El animalario universal del Profesor Revillor ́ by Javier Saez Castan and Miguel Murugarren, and Jorge Luis Borges ́ celebrated book ́Manual de zoology fantastica ́ from 1957. From these premises and through a process I call 'false scientific format’; mixing bones from different animals with wire and rubbish, I create new beings and pose these questions: Can life evolve without geological time? Will nature as we know it be able to deal with all the waste we pour over it, or will it succumb to environmental disaster? The answer is contained in these zoological displays: in the strength of ́evolution ́. They appear elegant, but hardly healthy or durable. They have the logical flaw of not coming from the natural course of evolution. They are the suffering victims of the whims and irresponsibility of modern day man. A battle between nature and the blindness of consumerism. With this work I honour the magic of natural evolution, anatomy and movement.
