Found abandoned in a kindergarten playground, this 20th Century English-made rocking horse was found counting the days to the eternal trashpile. This is the story of his journey back to life. After a lifetime of service down the playground mines, this pony had done his time and he was ready to be reborn into his Afterlife. After an extensive period of drying out, the horse received much-needed repair work, stabilising the timber, conserving the original painted surface and repairs to the metalwork. His former identity safely sealed for posterity under three layers of conservation-grade thermoplastic resin, the horse was ready for his final transformation*. It was then that the newly christened 'Blac Roc' began to reveal his true, inner ‘sugar skull’ soul. Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead rituals, in which past lives are festively celebrated, this art installation is an explosion of colour and life-affirming joy. The hand-painted design includes a nod to his Liverpudlian heritage (looks out for the well-known motifs). His eyes glint brightly with dazzling Swarovski crystals & even his soles are adorned with glistening diamond designs to bless him with an eternal spring in his step. Once fitted with all new, black leather tack along with the real, hand-knotted, horse hair mane and tail; harvested from Mongolian horses (who are not harmed in the process), his transformation becomes complete and the 'Blac Roc' is ready for the next life. Ready to rock his new owner's world. “Todos somos calaveras” ('We are all skeletons') *detailed and extensive conservation report available.
