About The Artwork

Since time immemorial, artists have explored, explained, and depicted time itself. More than anything (perhaps with the exception of "love"), time and its attendant consequences and complexities have excited our imagination and sometimes filled our nightmares. Birth, death, the passage of years, and much more – all of these are time's children. With this in mind, Time Waste grew out of the exploration of a very specific concept: what happens to all the effluvia of the time stream? Where do all the wasted moments, the missed opportunities go? And what do they look like? Time Waste attempts to explore and answer this question. Time Waste is itself designed and constructed from discarded parts of vintage clocks from the 1920s through the late 1950s. Salvaged from flea markets and junk yards located in the Bay Area's Silicon Valley, these parts once determined when people arose, when they worked, when they went home to loved ones, and sometimes, when they died. And yet now, these parts are discarded, no longer arbiters of anything, including their own fate. But they have one more role to play: these parts have evolved from determining the narrative of our lives to becoming the narrative itself. Everything in Time Waste is authentic, even the vintage label salvaged from a working clock and the counterweights from a pre-World War II German cuckoo clock. The desire was to tell the story of the time stream from the very parts that ordained the order and sequencing of the real time stream itself, and in this manner, Time Waste is wildly and accurately successful. The main body of the sculpture was deliberately set on a very simple Japanese lacquered plate base. Not only was the intent to detract as little as possible from the central design message of Time Waste, but there was also a desire to explicitly choose a material that was a representation of the stream of time. (The curve of the base comes from the warping effect of moisture and the passage of time – the base, manufactured a quarter century before Time Waste, was originally flat.) Time Waste was conceptualized, designed and executed in the Summer of 2014.
