Toucan Sculpture

I live in Russia, in St. Petersburg. The sky in my city is most often gray, low, it often rains. Even in the summer I often wear a coat. In St. Petersburg, people enjoy the sun and good weather, like a real miracle. Toucan, a bird living in tropical forests, is very similar to our city, despite the fact that it does not live here. Most of the toucan’s body is black. But the breast, beak, several feathers in the tail are so bright, wonderful in comparison with black color of the body! These contrasts impressed me a lot. For a long time, I studied the habits of an extraordinary bird from various videos, and in the zoo, I searched for a characteristic movement and plastic. I made a lot of sketches and only then I started modeling and painting. Only seeing the shadow, we understand that there is light. Contrasts make the world around us truly vibrant. I use light burning clay and make using hand sculpting techniques. The work is then fired in an electric kiln twice, the second time at a temperature of about 1080c. The work is decorated with different glazes. The nature of the clay and the design means there are small bumps and various marks. This effect is all part of the charm of the work.
