About The Artwork

I revisit founding myths and try to bring new interpretations in order to challenge Most of our beliefs and values systems are based on myths that are exaltation of humankind’s fears and hopes. In the recent years most has been done to challenge the society values into more contemporary and inclusive values. Despite all these advancements, I believe most of our behaviors (either conscious or not) are still controlled by the founding stories that were passed unto us by the previous generations. With this sculpture, I am revisiting a myth that has been written multiple times, and that is now well-known as another instance of a woman doing wrong for humanity: she ended up releasing the swarm of evil spirits on earth by opening a jar she was told not to touch. I think the current state of hate against women worldwide finds a back-up in this myth (along with other myths), and many are those who believe they are right to wrong women because it is “normal” history. The sculpture is composed of two elements: the egg-shape marble and the barbed-wire nest. The egg is a metaphor for the body of the woman, her ability to birth and thus the erotic attraction she creates. The egg is white, symbol of purity as it is requested for women to be pure in order to be attractive. But also the surface of the marble is naturally cracked in some parts, thus giving the impression it is about to be cracked open and release what is hidden inside. The nest, symbol of the house for both a woman and her potential family, arise here as a frontier between the woman and the rest of the world: the barbed-wire appears as a protection from the world but also as a danger for those trying to reach toward the woman. The combination of the two gives a feeling of attraction toward the work: one wants to reach toward it to touch it and ultimately to possess it, but at the same time one is scared to do so because it can cause pain. This impossibility to possess the object and to fully understand it creates a tension in the viewer between the experienced frustration and the fear that is arising. I believe like this controversial way of experiencing the work is somehow similar to the way men who discriminate on women feel.

I am searching the spectrum of the personal and the emotional, and how our contemporary consumerist society affects the way we live, feel and develop the notion of the selves. I am interested in how human continue to be true to their core in this environment despite the daily violence it obliges us to face and to commit to other. My works can be understood as elaborations of emotional reactions to societal issues. I often use myths as my primary support: I question and I twist them in order to extract the intrinsic meaning they are caring within themselves into the contemporary society. I try to express the myths in innovative ways in order to open up a new discussion about a topic. As a woman, my work is reflective of the distinctive challenges that I face in my private life, and I believe it shines a light and a commentary on societal issues that are inherent of our time. I decided to pursue my inquiry into identity through the specific lens of Trauma, whether it being physical, emotional or psychological. I am exploring how it affects one or more persons, and which strategies of survival can be found.
