Unwrapped Sculpture

'' My work in ceramics is inspired mostly by my social observations and experiences. The interactions in our personal and social experiences create distinct domains of our family, friends, school, work, travel, religion, relationships, acquaintances, etc. Within these domains, we present multiple versions of our ‘self’ because we choose what we hide or reveal depending on the social context and with whom we interact. The 'us' that we put forth is always an edited version of our real self. In some ways my art acknowledges the multiplicity in us and the paradox of our inevitable duplicity. In both my sculptural and functional works, I am drawn to juxtaposing concepts that are contradicting and contrasting in a form of visual or aesthetic displacement. I hope my art instigates my audience to thoughtful inquiry. Born in Singapore to a Chinese mother and Indian goldsmith father, I descended from four generations of traditional goldsmiths and hand jewellers. But I was trained in Computer Science and practiced as an IT Consultant after moving to UK and Europe while pursuing my love affair with clay. Throwing on the wheel is a happy hypnotism that I am addicted to. Most of my creations are born out of throwing binges, sometimes 20 to 30 pots in a day. That's how much I enjoy getting grounded in that process and achieving symmetry in the mud is my Zen. Anything and everything I absorb from everyday life, whether it's people, experiences, interactions, feelings or thoughts, they all seep out of me into my clay. '' Based between her studios in Cambridge and Geneva, Geetha completed a Master degree in Sculptural Practice in England,. Geetha is currently a resident artist at the Bruckner Ceramic Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland, with studios in France and Spain. Her sculptural practice portfolio includes porcelain, stoneware and glass. Having worked and lived internationally across the globe from Singapore and Australasia to US, England and Europe, Geetha’s personal experiences and social observations culminate in her artistic expressions about identity, social contrasts and societal contradictions.
