Number 9 is a unique contemporary piece of three dimensional wall art called a Voronoi Diagram based on the work of the 19th century Russian mathematician Georgy Voronoy. Voronoy devised a method to divide a three dimensional space into regions based on a collection of random points. Each set of random points results in a unique pattern. For this work I used a 3 dimensional rectangular polygon and divided the polygon into random 3D regions using the Voronoi Diagram algorithm. The shape and depth of each three dimensional region depends on the original random numbers making each sculpture unique. The Voronoi diagram is cut from a piece of 2 1/2” x 12” x 3/4” thick black walnut hardwood and mounted on a rich blue dyed piece of hardwood veneer. The frame is also made from black walnut and the overall dimensions are approximately 12” x 13” x 1 3/8”

I live in upstate New York near the Finger Lakes Region. My formal education is in the sciences and mathematics. As a college professor my academic work focused on how we interpret and understand our visual world through light, color, shading, form and texture. I draw inspiration for my art from my lifelong study of the natural world and my life experiences. Nature can evoke both strong positive and negative emotions. My current work expresses my interpretation of the world in a somewhat abstract form. I explore how and why we are emotionally affected by the combinations of patterns, shapes and colors. One of the most important aspects of my work is the actual design process. All of my work begins with a pencil and paper sketch. Once I formulate an idea for an art object, I explore and investigate the idea through variations in shape and materials resulting in a series of artwork. To enhance the emotional response of a particular piece I may selectively add color. I have worked with a wide range of mediums. Wood with its natural beauty is the ideal medium for my current work. I create each piece myself in my workshop studio in upstate New York. I have sold pieces of my work to collectors throughout the United States and internationally. Each piece is unique and is dated and signed.
