This sculpture in slate and brick was born when walking on the beach and seeing the different coloured bricks which had been washed up on the shore. I loved the texture of the worn bricks so they ended up in my workshop waiting for further inspiration. Whilst working a slate roof and seeing all the offcuts lying on the ground the idea came to me that the dark colour and harshness of the slate would be a lovely contrast to the subtle tones and smooth weathered surfaces of the bricks.
The brick and slate are set onto a plywood back with a black wooden surround which makes it stand out from the wall 3/4 of an inch. The slate overlaps the back board by varying amounts creating an irregular shape.
The slate and brick were given an oil/wax finish to bring out the natural colours.
There is a mounting rail supplied which when hung is concealed in the rebate formed on the back of the sculpture. This rail has several fixing holes for wall mounting, the piece then locates securely onto it.
This sculpture is unique and due to the reclaimed, naturally weathered materials cannot be reproduced.
