White Raku Bowl

This piece was created in a very old Japanese firing technique, called "Raku".
It was fired once without the glaze, than I applied the special transparent Raku glaze. When the piece was in the kiln again and the glaze had melted, I took it out of the kiln red hot, to make the glaze crack in the colder air. Then I directly put it into a big vessel with sawdust so the sawdust catches fire. If you close the vessel with a tight lid immediately, the oxygen inside will burn quickly and a reduced atmosphere is created, which makes the ashes go into the cracks and taint them black.
Raku Ceramic pieces are unique, you can never repeat them or get close to the same result again.

I love working in the Raku technique as it is even less predictable than other firing techniques and there is a risk that some pieces break because of the sudden high differences in temperature the clay has to deal with. BUT the risk bears great fruit: pieces that survive this treatment are exceptionally beautiful and unique.

This bowl can be used as sculpture or decoration only. It can be rinsed with clear water (no scrubbing, as otherwise the black colour in the cracks will slowly disappear).

Signature and date you will find underneath. All art comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Size: H21,5 cm, Ø 15,5 cm (H8,46 inch, Ø 6,10 inch)
Weight: 1615 g

Bettina Charlotte's career as an artist began after a long life of exploration. Although she has traveled around geographically too, Berlin/ Germany had been her base for 54 years - in 2013 this has changed as she decided to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira. Before starting her artistic career Bettina Charlotte has explored different professions: she travelled the world as flight attendant for Lufthansa, she learned to be and worked as professional photographer, studied adult education and worked with adults for many years, was self employed and worked as systemic life coach in Berlin, Germany – these professions have given her a wide horizon of different elements of life. Because of her constant drive to be creative, art has always accompanied her during times of other professions and in 2013 she finally decided to work as full time artist when she moved to the island of Madeira to be part of the local artist community. Perhaps because of all this together--getting to know so many earthly professions--her art has turned more into the abstract and sometimes metaphysical. Her special ability is intuitive painting in a gestural expressive way – she calls it “The Art to Listen to Your Heart” which she also teaches in workshops in Alentejo, on the Portuguese mainland. Bettina Charlotte spontaneously chooses the materials, tools and techniques - having fun and trusting her intuition to lead the way during the creative process is a very important factor for an authentic expression, she says. In early years she was inspired by Miro, Klimt, Klee, Picasso in painting and Rodin in sculpting. She lives and works in Portugal since 2013.
