About The Artwork

This piece tests visual languages surrounding the environment, in particular our global impact on it. We are changing the earths geology, through polluting activity and the use of plastics, entering an anthropocene era. This work explores the new destructive and somewhat symbiotic relationship the planet has with these materials. Using household car wash sponges that are synthetic and will take centuries to break down and letting them sit in the earth, absorbing elements of the natural. I then constrict them with plastic strimmer line, producing a visual metaphor for the future of our geology.

Through my practice I use the media of sculpture and print to question how we look at the world. I am interested in making images and objects that generate visual complexities, using artefacts from the landscape to evoke the effects of geological change and combine these with different plastics and man-made materials to create a visual metaphor for the Anthropocene. Understanding our own relationship with the planet is important and my work opens up these dialogues through hybrid constructs. I make formed forensic artificial ecosystems to show synthetic and organic materials in conjunction, dissecting the interaction between natural processes, geological time and human activity. I want my work to demonstrate growing concerns over destructive and polluting activity, questioning our awareness and impact on a global and individual level, however, rather than being overtly politicised the work hopes to engage debate through the use of material and aesthetic in an investigative way.
