About The Artwork

My sculptures are drawn from memory, imagination and visual reference, using elements of ocean plant and animal biology and anatomy, to create forms that play with reality. I invite you to look, engage your imagination, and form your own narrative about the beautifully strange form.  This piece is inspired by the ocean vents found in the deepest most unexplored parts of the world’s oceans. Here life thrives in the hostile environment and these places are thought to be where life first birthed on our beautiful planet. I wanted to create something that enshrined the fecundity of our oceans and would hint at our own beginnings. I drew on elements of human biology (it is both male and female), as well as marine creatures like sponges, anemones and tube worms, and elements of epiphytic plant culture to create a piece that teems with life and celebrates the symbiosis humans have with the ocean and all living things on our planet.  I worked in a porcelain-white stoneware body which is incredibly plastic and gives me the ability to create fine delicate ornamentation and then I picked an oatmeal shino glaze and mixed with white stoneware and clear glazes. Finally some of the detail was picked out in celadon to give it a little more natural hint of plant-like colour. Each glaze was selected to evoke the marine environment, a nod to the visual reference that inspired the piece, and to give the feeling of age and calcification. The name has been chosen as sponges form amazing collaborations with other plants and animals, as well as supporting a huge range of life through being a food source, but also filtering huge volumes of water through their open-structured bodies circulating nutrients around reefs. They are a true colony of life. Ultimately I want you to care about our marine life. I hope by making something beautiful, I can form a connection and inspire to protect our beautiful oceans, the life-support system of our planet.
