About The Artwork

My sculptures are drawn from memory, imagination and visual reference, using elements of ocean plant and animal biology and anatomy, to create forms that play with reality. I invite you to look, engage your imagination, and form your own narrative about the beautifully strange life-form. Part coral, part nudibranch, part fungus, part imagination - this piece blurs the line between animal and plant and captures the essence of life in our oceans. Corals are a collaboration between plant and animal, in a variety of forms and colours and I wanted to capture the elegance and beauty. I worked with a white stoneware clay, coiling and pinching to create delicate fronds that invoke the movement of these beautiful creatures in ocean currents. The piece has been decorated in celadon glaze, volcanic slip, with oxide applied to the fronds to pick out the detail. Each glaze has been selected to evoke the marine environment, a nod to the visual reference that inspired the piece, and to give the feeling of life and movement. Ultimately I want you to care about our marine life. I hope by making something beautiful, I can form a connection and inspire to protect our beautiful oceans, the life-support system of our planet.
