About The Artwork

My sculptures are drawn from memory, imagination and visual reference, using elements of ocean plant and animal biology and anatomy, to create forms that play with reality. I invite you to look, engage your imagination, and form your own narrative about the beautifully strange form.  Glistening tightly-bunched mussels clinging to rocks are one of the joys of poking around on the shoreline, look closely and you’ll see there is so much texture and colour. I was keen to capture their togetherness and sea foamy textures. I used an earthenware paper clay body to create the base up-turned pinch pot structure and hand-modelled each muscle, tightly packing them. The pot has been decorated with multiple layers of glazes, slips and oxides and has had multiple firings to create something that feels like it has been growing and weathering away on the shoreline. As you spend time looking at the piece you'll notice the beautiful colours from browns, blues, greens and oily blacks, as well as the odd flash of fleshy pink. The volcanic slip creates a foamy wash that evokes the retreating tide. The sculpture is small and neat and is designed to be picked-up, looked at and turned over in your hands. Ultimately I want you to care about our marine life. I hope by making something beautiful, I can form a connection and inspire to protect our beautiful oceans, the life-support system of our planet.
