About The Artwork

These sculptural pieces belong to a series inspired by images of monks taking to the streets of Burma/Myanmar in 2008. In Vietnamese, taking to the streets is called 'xuống đường', literally 'going down to the streets'. Vietnamese history, on the other hand, is full of 'lên đường,' literally 'going up the path'; or political mobilization campaigns for war and revolution, that have resulted, for me, in an ever present fear of the knock on my door by the political and cultural police--the A-25. I was greatly moved by the quietude and strength of the monks' inaudible footfall on street paving against political power. The series make use of an old local pottery tradition of making water jars with coarse clay. I began modeling the series in September of 2010, and began making these pieces in November 2010 at the Biên Hòa College for the Arts (formerly École des Arts Appliqué de Biên Hòa). So far, the biggest piece measures 100cm x 35 cm; and the smallest 25 cm x 9 cm.
