About The Artwork

“Algorithm Paradise” is an exploration of ideology in “Expericece Era”. In the era of humanism as the main ideology, freedom and democracy are considered to be a kind of moral belief as a matter of course, the individuality and diversity it dominated also deepened the influence and value of the Internet. In Experience Era, people can record and share experiences by allowing other people to feel their experience through Internet and then create emotional resonance and sense of belonging. In order to deepen the diversity of the Internet, the more distinctive the experience is, the more value it will have. However, freedom of consciousness that humanism firmly believes may be merely algorithms of emotion and reason. Algorithm refers to a methodize step from calculations and problem solving to decision making. Emotions and desires are the process of weighing all variables and probabilities, and the “best result” that is obtained in the trade-off process is a sensation which promotes people to make decisions. Now the population is growing like an avalanche and “individuality” has begun to disappear. People’s faces are the same with only a few differences, their behaviors are mutual imitations of each others and their attitudes also can be calculated. Therefore, human beings exist as an element of a whole rather than as individuals. However, humanistic beliefs lead people to believe that everyone is special, equal and having different values as they pursue personal happiness and significance. This belief has brought enormous wealth to countries, and maintained diplomatic and commercial intercourse between them. Nevertheless, in the future where artificial intelligence will create greater value than human that humanism will no longer exists, what will become the dominant ideology of the times? This unstoppable rapid development has brought panic to many people, when they hear of the myriad of possibilities of the future, they were worried about whether they will be out of touch with the times and be unable to integrate to the world. Life is like hyperlinks, which create people’s identities, dreams and thoughts. But the links we chosen are very different from what a newborn baby or a child who is only four or five years old has chosen. Thus, our outdated antiquated identity, dreams and thoughts will not be integrated into the world that is created by the rapid development. At the beginning of the main video, I took screenshots of a man dressed in blue from a ordinary yoga tutorial. Yoga, as a spiritual practice in some countries, also is a symbol of Buddhism. The electric fan that appears in the following scene shows the restored sensory experience of natural wind, and provides a better translation to the next grassland scene. Those two scenes also have a irony of using technology to restore the natural experience. In the middle of the video, the appearance of the Buddha portrait shows the public’s attitude toward religion. These metaphors express that people in history switched their attention from the religious significances to science and humanism as the main productivity and creativity.
