About The Artwork

This is a clip from "DERMALIAN by Sylvia Toy: Storyboard, Part One." The clip can be viewed (ad-free): https://youtu.be/F_RGz0u_33w. DERMALIAN is a feature film in progress in San Francisco, California; and was selected in 2018 as a fiscally sponsored project of Women Make Movies (https://www.wmm.com/sponsored-project/dermalian/). The storyboard contains clips from research videos made during the first phase of pre-production. The full "Storyboard, Part One" is on YouTube at https://youtu.be/wBWpoMmUjJg. Screenings: Kino Klub Split, excerpt screened October 2019, Croatia. I am offering a maximum of five high resolution (422 ProRes HQ) clips from 45 to 150 seconds in duration, not including titles and credits. The clips will be unique in that I will not sell the same clip to more than one collector–in other words, these clips are not part of an edition. The titles include the U.S. Copyright Office registration number. The end credits will include the movie’s links and bibliographical references. Clips will be transferred to collectors via flashdrive. In my opinion as someone who works on some stage of filmmaking every day of the week, there is nothing more precious than pure, raw work. Logline of DERMALIAN: Aliens long after humans, who having discovered the ruins of the New York Public Library & becoming enamored of humans, establish the Ruins of the NYPL archaeological site & investigate why humans became extinct. Summary of the Storyboard: Some Dermalians learned to take on human form, which is believed to enhance their ability to study human culture. Olivier, a celebrated Dermalian anthroarchaeologist who became a Shakespearean actor after translating a collection of plays that he found in the Ruins of the NYPL, was the first Dermalian to adopt human form. Unfortunately, at the time the transformation was not fully understood and he eventually became comatose. To keep Olivier alive, Dermalian doctors create a therapeutic bodysuit that stimulates him to constantly sleepwalk in order to keep his body and brain alive. As he sleepwalks, he performs Shakespearean monologues as well as he ever did; and the Dermalians have affectionately nicknamed him "The Shakespearean ReEnactor." In the DERMALIAN Storyboard, The Guardian, who has custody of Olivier, has agreed to allow him to be taken to Earth, where it is hoped a cure for his condition might sooner be found. Technique: My process involves several layers of Chromakeying, sometimes including the actor’s skin. I key one element, such as the screen, then another layer such as a costume or prop, etc. I primarily use Final Cut Express so sometimes it takes a week to completely key a very short scene. I do not like still images behind my keyed clips and I have a large backdrop library of moving images including B-roll that I have shot myself and clips downloaded from NASA.
