About The Artwork

I've been perplexed and disgusted by the concept and reality of racism for about as long as I can remember. I vividly remember seeing a news clip of white police officers attacking black people with German Shepherds and watching them dogs the young men with a sadistic pleasure that would make even the devil blush. This was a news clip from post-Apartheid South Africa; POST Apartheid. I was young. Far too young to be exposed to such a gruesome reality but I had to see it; that was our reality. That is still our reality the world over. We are not valued. We are hated. So many black people around the world have fallen victim to this disgusting plague, robbing us of our livelihoods, our dignity, our sense of self-worth and our lives. It has to stop. This is my little contribution to this struggle that has, sadly, defined our existence on this earth. A Simple Message: BLACK LIVES MATTER.

I'm a self taught multidisciplinary artist. I use different mediums but my camera is my favourite brush at the moment. The camera is probably the most relevant tool in contemporary art because it can produce exact reflections of ourselves and our worlds; I think it can be used to achieve more than that. The camera has now existed for far too long for us to be using it the same way we did when it was first invented. The medium yearns for abstract expression. My approach towards portraiture is similar to that of an expressionist painter. I make the picture and I make it how I want. My digital works include collages and illustrations. Through these mediums I express myself with a bit more freedom.
