Collage of vintage paper and acrylic paint. The paper includes layers of wallpaper from the 19th and early 20th century and a fisherman's map of the Kyles of Bute and Inchmarnock Water in Scotland dated 1956. The map has hand-written notes and a red point indicating dangerous rocks beneath the surface. The picture combines the rich colours and textures of the past with a rough style to create an age-worn feeling of the passage of time. Alongside this is the pure joy of the rich colours and the naïve decoration of the scattering of stars. The imperfect fragmented frame opens up the composition beyond the standard confines of the panel and highlights the simplicity in the hand of man. The collage has been created on a cradled wood panel and treated to archival standards to preserve the colours of the paper before unifying it with a wash of white acrylic paint. The wood has been sealed with Golden GAC 100, the paper coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the collage protected with Golden UV matte varnish. 20 x 16 x 0.8" (508 x 406 x 20mm) The collage wraps over the sides of the wood panel and requires no frame. The picture has been wired and is ready to hang. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
