About The Artwork

‘Blue Chapel’ is a mixed media piece using photography, digital art, paint and marble dust on an oak block. It is reminiscent of the walls of a decaying but clearly once beautiful old building. Ornate architectural features faintly reveal themselves beneath the peeling and cracked facades. The years of human touch have brushed against this building’s surfaces and individual fingers have intimately explored its crevices. The slow passage of time has soaked into its existence and drawn delicate cracks upon its history. I have used different kinds of mark making within the piece; drawn, painted and daubed. It is heavy and textured in places, faded and worn in others. The primed surface of rabbit skin glue and marble dust deliberately drips down the sides. There is an ebb and flow between the torn and fragmented imagery and a duality in that ‘Blue Chapel’ could be described as both object and painting.

I am a London based artist, originally from New Zealand. My practice combines photography, digital art, collage, painting and writing. I am interested in ideas surrounding the fragment such as absence, juxtaposition, interconnectedness and transformation. I see patterns and rhythms in the processes that I use, the marks that I make and the words that I carve out and assemble. My subject matter can vary, but tends to focus on the ordinary, the overlooked and the mundane. The trappings of everyday, fleeting, ephemeral, seen out of the corner of one’s eye, texture, beauty and ugliness packed together in a kind of natural collage. I try to convey a sense of flux, of a perpetual ebb and flow between the abstract and the figurative, reality and the imagination to create numerous points of departure.
