About The Artwork

This work is a collage made out of original photographies, digitally edited, cut and overlapped on rubber and cardboard. It is a detailed and meticulous work which is part of a series of works called "Comunidade" During two years (201-2016) I was living in Rio de Janeiro, facing the favela reality every day. Its social, geographical and urban characteristics were like a magnet to me. Captured by this overwhelming reality I took hundreds of pictures from different "favelas cariocas". Some time later, I decided to create a new universe based on all these images I had ccollected. This universe was meant to be as complex as the favela meaning itself. It should be a contradiction between beauty and horror. By using vivid colours and repetitive structures I intend to create a rhythm and harmony that captures the viewers attention. At first glance it is almost an abstraction, but once the viewer get closer he discovers a whole world inside these colours: a swamped, overcrowded world, full of meanings to interprate. Working with the favela concept allows me to set out an issue I am interested in: the way our societies organizes, the relationship with space we inhabit, the way of life we are producing and reproducing. On the other hand, this series of works has allowed me for trying out new techniques that merge different languages of art sucha as photography, digital work, and collage.

I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1979. I lived there until 2013, when I moved to Rio de Janeiro. After a couple of years living in Brazil and Cuba I returned to Uruguay. At the present I live in La Pedrera, a small town located in the east coast of the country. Here I have settled down my atelier and work sorrounded by trees and ocean. The subject matter of my actual work has to do with the human being and its relationship with the space he lives in. In my work I use and mix different techniques such as photography, painting and digital work, in order to explore a discover the results of this fusion. My inspiration comes from the urban life, from contemporary society scenes, which I photograph and process afterwards. Some of the subjetcs I work are related to the concepts of crowd, urban agglomeration and isolation. I feel stimulated by colours and use them as way of capture the attention of the audience at once.
