About The Artwork

I start with an idea, then begin culling directly related or thematically related imagery, usually from public domain sources. Then I get to work: piecing all of it together in ways that convey the idea on an emotional level. As these juxtapositions flow into one another, more complex ideas build, and finally, the piece becomes an expression not only of the idea I’ve based it on, but also a reflection of all the ideas the viewer brings to it. Throughout this process, I’ve been deeply inspired by the techniques and ideas in literary poetry, cinema, and Vajrayana Buddhism. In particular, the Surrealist Cut-Up Method, popularized by William S. Burroughs, has inspired a keen fascination with mixing thematically related imagery with seemingly unrelated imagery. I’ve found that riffing off this method generates a kind of exciting friction, much like the friction discussed throughout Soviet Montage Theory; which was aimed at creating a language of film that conveys complex ideas through juxtapositions of simple images.
