About The Artwork

After losing my mom to breast cancer after a 17 year remission, I started the series called Holding On (and Letting Go). My work often reflects issues around facing mortality, health and disease, mother and child. This work is about loss and grief, a reality and common condition of what it means to be human. We all face loss, yet in this series, I try to hold on to the connection. The relationship is never lost. The use of hands, powerful symbol, is a point of connection. Through touch, we feel, and from our veins run our lifelines. I feverishly photographed my mom holding each family member's hand and each of those photos are the starting point for the piece. They are small, 12 x 12 wood blocks, best displayed in groupings. I hope that in this work, the viewer can feel the sense of love and loss as my goal is to make meaningful and moving images. This work was recently hung in an installation in the Voices & Visions, Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease at The Art Center, Highland Park.

I have been a working artist for over 20 years. After growing up outside of Chicago, I moved to New York, where I received my master's of art from the prestigious program through NYU and the International Center of Photography. When I returned to Chicago, I continued to work on my art, writing and curating all while raising 4 kids. My work focuses on the effects of genetics, the mother/daughter relationships, and the body. I explore themes of cancer as a metaphor in my own work as well as the biennial exhibit I curate, Voices & Visions, Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease. The mind, body and spirit connections and separations echo the theme in art that out of darkness comes light.
