About The Artwork

This is an original silver print, made in the darkroom from a medium format negative of a luminaire in Central Park. Each luminaire (also known as a lamppost) has a unique number that references the larger city grid. This is #6755; it is at 67th street and closer to the west side of the city because it ends in an odd number. The floating ellipses of blue are bits of the New York Times. I started photographing the Dayburning Luminaires of Central Park in 2001, right after 9/11. It was a ritual that soothed my shattered nerves. Revisiting these images many years later, I cherish the time I spent there, wandering Central Park, deeply focused, appreciating the light, shadow, and activity of this beloved space. The objective of this work is to capture that moment, which is now a magical moment. This piece has a white mat and is displayed in a white, traditional frame.
