This mixed media photo-collage, like all my work, comes from my exploration of the notion of identity and is informed by my own personal struggles, and indeed, joys of living with mental illness. My work is process based and seeks to explore the spatial and temporal dimensions of neurosis, awkwardness and artifice. A means of controlling and understanding my creation of public and private personas which serve to hide as much of my identity as they reveal and my struggle to try to find a balance between these different manifestations of self. For each of my pieces I create the costumes, act as the model and photograph myself. I also like to incorporate botanical elements into most of my pieces as a further means of exploring the dichotomay of the real versus the artificial, to ponder where we have all come from and how we grow and change over our lives. Apart from the concept of the work, however, I also want to create bold, richly coloured works which serve as aesthetic pieces in their own right.
