According to Plato and Aristotle, there are many ways to love, with research pointing to there being up to eight different types. I have decided to concentrate on four for my I AM LOVE study. Agape; this is universal love, such as the love for strangers, nature, or God. Storge (‘store-gae’); or familial love, is a kind of love pertaining to that between parents and their children. Philia; or friendship, is shared goodwill and finally, Eros is sexual or passionate love, and is the type most akin to our modern construct of romantic love. The model for I Am Love is my brother-in-law, Kieran, who as a person exudes love and a true hippie vibe. The large circle behind him is a peace sign and blends all sorts of images depicting the four various types of love. From films to sitcoms, I have included shows that have had an influence on generations. Interlaced throughout the sign are flowers which pay homage to the hippie culture that still is alive and well today. Within the body of the work, the glasses are a focus with the 60’s anti-war slogan front and central - make love, not war. In contrast to this is an image of my father returning from Vietnam into the loving arms of his mother.

I am an Australia artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a collage artist I am fascinated with the use of color, pattern and texture and try to combine these elements in my work in an innovative and exciting way. My technique is still evolving and employs an exploratory and playful process that can incorporate costuming, set design, photography, graphic manipulation, collage and painting. I also hide images within my paper collages, creating a second level of interest beyond the initial image.
