I make abstract paintings with paper. My work overall examines and explores aspects of ephemerality, unpredictability, and eventual acceptance as it relates to human experience. More precisely, embracing of the idea that all things and beings change and evolve followed by the inevitable ending and simultaneous outcome of a new birth is very much at the core of my practice and intention. Whether the expression is manifested in heavily textured stripped lines, rigidly structured or fluidly aligned “grid-like” surface, or intensely sanded down geometric shapes “unearthed” from the bottom layer, the key to my visual articulation is in the process. In a nutshell, several layers of paper are glued together then the very layers are destroyed by stripping, sanding, or peeling in order to reveal what’s underneath. In the end, I celebrate tenuous and delicate beauty of life through limning universal human experience of precarious impermanence and its ironic exchangeability with life onto a canvas by performing the acts of building, annihilating, and eventually, birthing and revealing anew.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
