About The Artwork

This picture of bus passengers was inspired by a snapshot of an Israeli bus taken c. 2004. At that time, buses in Israel were in the news because of bomb attacks. Fortunately, my experience was quite different. The dice, found in the photo were from an insurance advertisement on the back of a preceding bus. To me, this symbolized the transportation gamble. Though statistically it was more dangerous to drive a car, the dangers of bus travel made sensational news stories. Those years were part of what is known as the "Second Intifada". People rode the buses, even though they were civilian targets of Palestinian suicide attacks. Between 2003 and 2005, I often rode on buses and used these rides as visual inspiration. I can't sketch on a moving bus, so from time to time I brought my vintage Leica camera. The bus was often crowded, and it was difficult to steady the camera. When I got the pictures back from the photo shop they were often dark or fuzzy. My resulting works were composed from many photos and memories. This particular painting was made six years after the Intifada, when I came across a previously unnoticed photograph. I felt I needed to make a picture which showed the way my camera 'saw' the scene, but hinted at the relationship to news coverage. The picture is painted with semi-transparent acrylic over Israeli newsprint. The dice were created from pieces of balsa wood so that the symbol of gambling is a focal point, inside windshield. The message is general and not specific to the original situation. Instead of a message like, 'don't gamble, get insurance,' the dice remind us of the gamble people take every day.

Art is a passion, which I steadfastly develop in my own way, getting inspiration from fragments of poetry, photographs or stories, rather than from drawings or paintings of other artists. Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion, curator of my solo exhibition in Tel Aviv wrote: “She doesn’t paint according to instructions or styles, but evolves at her own pace, creating original paintings manifesting passages connecting different realities.” My story stretches from my childhood home in Southern California to the Sea of Galilee in Israel. My dual citizenship has strongly influenced my perspectives. From multiple traditions, art emerges as the visual expression of movement and multi-layered ideas. I am currently working with encaustic paint that I make in my studio. My work incorporates a variety of materials: oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil sketches, and found objects.
