About The Artwork
Venus Abolitionis (Venus of Abolition) is the 8th of my Venus series. Collaged from vintage maps of Paris and New York City she symbolises little known facts about the Statue of Liberty: Originally named La Liberté Éclairant le Monde (Liberty Enlightening the World), the statue was proposed by the French abolitionist Edouard de Laboulaye to commemorate emancipation - the end of slavery in the United States. Ironically, because of segregation no Blacks were allowed to attend the dedication ceremony on October 28, 1886. No women attended either. 20.5 x 24 inches
