I think precisely the opposite is true. I mean the gap between the ancient Greeks and psychoanalytic insight is so radical that if you read for example, the late Heidegger, you will find that he provides a very explicitly philosophical and not only philosophical—account of Freud. For Heidegger, Freud is ultimately one more step towards the kind of extreme individualism of a subjectivized self and there is no room for the dimension of language or symbolic communication for Heidegger. There is no space for symbolic structure, and this is really the paradox of psychoanalysis: on the one hand it appears to be a clearly natural science, while, on the other hand it is one of the great scientific paradigms that has a strong impact on our vision of human being. And the strange paradox is that at its most radical Freud already got statements that transcend the domain of natural science. What Freud had in mind was the idea of a redemption through a truthful narrative

While Mark M. Whelan's art is primarily portraits and figurative pictures. However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
