I think that Freud would have loved this idea of a kind of impersonal writing. I'm quite fascinated by a story told by the French writer Roland Barthes who was at some point invited to a dinner with Lacan, a dinner in which Lacan said something like “I’m one more person, so why don't you just add me along with the others to your guest list?” And Lacan was not joking. Lacan was asking for a simple rule of politeness. But, of course, he didn’t ask for the reason why he wouldn’t be simply added as another guest: namely that there was a fundamental difference between what he does and what the others do. Barthes tells us how in order to avoid embarrassment all of them made silly jokes and so on but once they were alone with drinks, Lacan then asked, “So, what did you talk about?” And Barthes confessed that of course, he did talk about Lacan, about his ideas, but always in such a way that Lacan was just one among others. And this is what Lacan liked —that even those who addressed him directly totally ignored him.
