Fiona wore a Breton shirt. I'm a genetics PhD researcher. One morning I was performing a DNA treatment that involved an ethanol-based buffer. I spilled a little of the buffer on a plastic container labelled in permanent marker. The ink formed spontaneous patterns, influenced by the shape and angle of the container. I began to play with ink and ethanol buffer, printing simple shapes and figures onto my lab notepads. From this I developed a method of printing using Sharpies and ethanol solutions, and overlaid the prints with fine-liner pen to add depth and detail.
