About The Artwork

This is the first drawing I completed from direct observation in my adopted town, the medieval bastide Cordes-sur-Ciel in the Tarn region of S.W. France. It is a straightforward architectural study, completed in classic line and wash style of the building in which I lived, worked and exhibited 2015-18. This colombage side of the Barbacane (watchtower) building is thought to date from the 17th century. The Surrealist painter Francis Meunier lived here for around thirty years. Famous visitors included Andre Breton, Albert Camus and Juliette Greco. The ground floor which now houses the gallery was previously a weaver's workshop. When purchased by the previous owner, a local architect, it had an earth floor and a loom that filled almost the entire space. I lived with my wife and dog in the rooms above. My main aim in completing this piece was to record the beauty of this building in an accurate, loving manner.

Born 1955 Tottenham,London. Re-located from Norfolk to Cordes-sur-Ciel, France 2015. Now resident in Coulon, Deux Sevrés, France. Stephen Clary's artistic predilections have remained constant throughout his career - an intense appreciation of natural beauty, vibrancy of colour, a certain tautness of line. As his work has developed, so has an appreciation of the way in which the eye will travel over a subject in order for it to 'make sense'. Fragmentation, transparency, multiple viewpoints, negative space are all enlisted in his work, combining to form a harmonious and resonant ensemble. He would site a diverse range of influences - Klimt & Schiele, Cubism & Futurism, Japanese painters & stained glass makers. After a somewhat turbulent seven years in France, he is finally settled in the beautiful 'Green Venice' of the Marais Poitevin. He is joyfully engaged in exploring the possibilities, 'weaving the strands together', always looking for something beautiful. Contact phone number 0033 (0) 6 13 67 79 77
