About The Artwork

Made in a sojourn in Balcik in 2010. Part of a series of drawings with this subject. Literature: Emil Nicolae, "Dumitru D. Bostan-The place and the Journey", Piatra-Neamt, 2014, p. 67, illustrated. An art book with 105 illustrations of the original artworks. In the succession of Dumitru Bostan (the senior), this week (more precisely, Thursday, July 22 this time, at 18.00 at "Lascar Vorel" Art Gallery in Piatra-Neamt, there will be the opening of a new exhibition of the painter Dumitru D. Bostan. The exhibition will include 22 works (oil, watercolor, pastel, crayon, medium and small size works) made this year. The theme dominates the landscape, which is the constant concern of the artist in recent years. We can say that, step by step (even if we take into account his travels), he has built an imagistic universe that balances between land and water, between "up" and "down," between the "full glory" and "Full empty" (not necessarily between "empty" and "full"!). We already have two axes of this universe, consolidated in previous exhibitions, which are based on three main coordinates: Piatra-Neamt, Biarritz and Venice. Now Dumitru D. Bostan adds a third axis and a fourth coordinate: Piatra-Neamţ-Balcic (where he spoke and worked in June last). It is remarkable that Piatra-Neamţ remains a constant in this artistic prelude / investigation, a sort of counterweight that has to balance and guide the dynamics of the plastic vision and which could, for example, be reflected (as in a Ideal panopticum) in the "mirrors" of exotic images, if the painter gathers together all of the "notation" of the book. Here is a way to look at Dumitru D. Bostan's exhibition, in which not only the local matrix of "figuration" matters, but the filtering of the atmosphere, of the feeling, of the existential spring, as well as the exercise / technique of fixing them in the chromatic and the construction of paintings. Emil Nicolae “Realitatea”, Monday, June 19, 2010 “It is a well-known (and therefore often envied or imitated) thing: the artist is the most free creature on the planet. At the same time, there is one thing as well hidden: the artist is the prisoner of his own work. A supportive contradiction, it would be said, how long it is perceived from the outside. But when we look down and discover that the opera is not a simulation but a consequence of destiny, we realize that the artist's "freedom" closes in significant quotation marks! Because working as a destiny involves rigor, and renunciations, and limitations, and hesitations, etc. Not exactly comfortable. It's like a wonderful plant that stimulates exhausting effusions precisely because it has grown under the tension of a value formwork. At Dumitru D. Bostan all this means either the escape into the landscape with all the artist's imagination for the imaginary city, or the introduction of a cold chromatic counterpoint in spite of the dominant warm background or the insistence on a detail even in the development of a integrative vision (composition) integrative, or a respite assumed in watercolor or conté even under the technical pressure of oil, and so on. Opera therefore implies preserving the inner coherence of the original "project" of the subliminal matrix of free and diversified expression”. And above all, and with all these things, quality matters. Here is what is to be found in the album of the painter Dumitru D. Bostan. Emil Nicolae
