About The Artwork

An exploration of anxiety related to roles that young girls try on as they develop a sense of identity; the forces that shape young girls as they grow to adulthood, and the anxieties that surface through the process; the dog or wolf signifies a protector or a predator; the ambiguity of the animal and of the space creates a tension and sense of unease, as we hold both fear and trust in the world during unstable times.

My work is an investigation of the human psyche, especially relating to the subconscious; dreams, memory, and reverie. I like to explore family systems, in their various forms and definitions, using layering, fragmentation and appropriation to undermine familiar narratives relating to socially accepted views of the family and its functions. I hope to raise questions on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and other types of psychological scarring that may result from war, forced relocation, imprisonment and violent conflict; specifically, how these events may mutate or infect subsequent generations, shaping the psychological underpinnings of the family system, that serve as the motivating factors, conscious or unconscious, of the human psyche. https://www.stephanie-j-ryan-artist.com/ https://www.facebook.com/stephaniejryan.artist, http://www.artslant.com/global/artists/show/233188-stephanie-j-ryan,
