Black Rain. A place where dogs eat broken umbrellas Ink on paper 2010. Walking through Manchester U.K. in the mid 1980's to go to the cinema to see 'Alien 2' and passing the Hulme cresents where dogs would eat broken umbrellas. In the film there is a u-shaped alien ship on the planet the Nostromo crew lands on, vaguely similar to the Hulme cresents. In the early 90's 'The Dogs Of Heaven', a rave collective from Manchester managed to haul a car to the top of one of the cresents and throw it off during an out door rave event. Crazy stuff like that went on. In the summer a man covered head to toe in tin foil and sunglasses would be seen in the cresents deflecting the suns rays. Back then this was about as urban, down trodden and dirty as living standards could get. There was no rent or maybe £5 a week. Students naturally gravitated to the area and despite the oppressive nature of the cresents there was a community spirit and love for the place. Borderline anarchy. The cresents have since been knocked down to be replaced with houses with gardens. 'Black Rain. A place where dogs eat broken umbrellas' is about Manchester and the Hulme Cresents.
