About The Artwork

Cleo de Merode was a french dancer at the turn of the last century. This work was created with pencil and a powdered charcoal/water wash on Arches #140 hot press watercolor paper with a deckle edge on all 4 sides. This is a somewhat new, less painterly, direction for me in both materials and technique. I'm interested in the amorphous yet graphic nature of the black shapes and the contrast between those and the realism of the face and hair. I'm going to pursue this direction for the next few pieces at least.
