About The Artwork

I drew a series of these "settings" around this time, arranging and drawing everyday items in a familiar and formal manner. The rubric of "settings" (to me) implied that any assortment of things could be drawn in this way, like a still life. Formal arrangements of any collection of things become a table setting at dinner, main object centered, minor objects placed in supplicant roles adjacent. I think I was probably inspired by a trend in the upscale shelter magazines of photographing people's personal totems set out on top of a table or desk. I used this same angled perspective in a drawing of a couple dozen everyday English household items for a book cover for NYRB, a Kingsley Amis story collection, the last of several Amis covers I did for them: Bass ale, VIM, Gordons Gin, Bovril, false teeth, fountain pen, toy ray gun, light bulb, fork, scouring brush, etc. Everyday things assemble themselves into something more significant and resonant if they are arranged with care. I have drawn hundreds of everyday objects over the years, in various categories, but I find engineered things especially interesting. Cameras, transistor radios, eyeglasses, carpenters' tools, handguns, toys, etc. Meaning accumulates around collected things like iron shavings round a magnet. (I have drawn magnets too.) These arrangements of things become a two dimensional art installation with the simple application of graphite or ink to paper.
