About The Artwork

This drawing is one of an ongoing series of Dark Landscapes. Currently I have made twenty-two of these drawings. For this series I have used portrait format rather than the traditional landscape frame. I see these drawings as sections through the view, layers of a composite image. They are all the same size in charcoal (sketch stick for it dark grittiness) on cartridge paper. This drawing was directly inspired by one of my regular walks around Langstone Harbour in Hampshire at low tide. I love the wide, wet dark mudflats and a storm brewing over the sea.

I am an abstract painter based in Portsmouth, UK. I was born in Yorkshire and have lived in many parts of this country and also in Santiago de Chile. I originally studied 3D design and was in design practice for many years. In 1994 I went back to university and took a degree in Visual Studies and have been working at being an artist since graduating. I love all things monochrome, photography, Film Noir, and especially charcoal drawings. Consequently a large amount of my current output is charcoal drawings on paper. My work is mostly abstract landscape inspired by years of serious hiking and cycling. I also listen to a lot of Jazz when I'm in the studio and so have an ongoing series of drawings based on this music. I am also a songwriter/guitar player with Film Noir inspired band Murderville.
