About The Artwork

This piece is part of a series of works produced with the goal of eking as much life as possible from a one inch section of charcoal. It was made on 100% recycled paper and is part of a series titled "Embodied Energy" 20% of the revenue generated from the sale of this work will be donated to Iowa State University's Biorenewables Research Laboratory to support the work of those seeking to improve our relationship with the world around us. By supporting this work, you also make it possible for the artist to attend the innovative new program, Building Beauty, which will take place in Naples, Italy in October 2017. This program is built upon the work of Christopher Alexander whose theories have affected Software Design, Architecture, Urban Design, Sociology, and many other fields. The program is housed in the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, a beautiful monastery overlooking Mt Vesuvius. Bryan Mock (b. 1988 in Miami, Florida) has long had a keen sense of the emotional affects of space and a deep appreciation for the role of play in creativity. His current work is part of a multi-year long break from the modern path of an architect in training in favor of one which allows him to explore timeless patterns of embodiment, and search out a visual language which ties the sacred to our modern understanding of the universe. This project is called the #MilkweedMandala, and all process involved in this work is viewable on Instagram by searching for the hashtag #MilkweedMandala. A George Washington Scholar at Iowa Statue University, Bryan spent the early part of his university education as a Computer Engineering major. Despite enjoying the math and digital logic classes, he felt some loss in neglecting the humanities. He found an engaging mix of the technical and the creative within the Architecture program and graduated with his professional architecture degree in 2013. Bryan's first professional experience was with the non-profit design firm MIIM Designs, headed by the visionary Maryam Eskandari. Under her leadership he had the opportunity of working on a diverse range of projects including the design of concepts for refugee homes as a part of the UNHabitat's push to respond to the growing refugee crisis around the world. During a brief period of employment in Aspen, Colorado his eyes were opened to the shocking effects of an ever widening income gap while participating in the full renovation of a 60,000 square foot home. Though his career path has been winding and varied, it has always orbited around a desire to use his creative talents toward playing a small part in shifting the global community into a more equitable, resilient, and meaningful place to live, work, and play. Bryan intends to attend the inaugural Building Beauty program at Suor Orsola Benincasa University in Naples, Italy. The curriculum for this innovative new program is built directly from the work of Christopher Alexander
