ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Conté crayon & pastel on paper After "Jardine's Naturalist's Library" "Jardine’s Naturalist’s Library" is a series of forty small volumes on natural history illustrated with etched and colored plates which was published Victorian England, 1833-1843. Dover Books has made a selection of the illustrations which are economically available to all. I chose to work from those compositions, but magnified each in a larger-than-life format. Rather than the original fixed lines of etching, I chose to use the softer, messier mediums of conté crayon and pastel, which I felt would add a bit of fidget and flutter to the birds. I tried to apply a more immediate and natural hand to the Naturalist’s Library.

I grew up in rural Ohio, where in the 5th grade my art teacher began encouraging me to draw. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad, painting, drawing, and sculpting in Venice, Italy, and earned a Master's degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband, John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
