I first encountered Kali in 1988, in Mussoorie, in the form of a haunting, female saddhu, with wild eyes and a snake wrapped around her neck. Her consort, Shiva, was also terrifying. I met Kali many times after that... one time, as a statue in Nepal, covered in goat's blood, and I didn't fall, but was thrown down before her. She nearly headbutted me into the Ganga river, in her incarnation as a buffalo in Varanasi. I smelled the burning flesh all around me. She is the goddess of time... and, ultimately, the goddess of death. She is known to be the slayer of the ego, the slayer of illusion
